Samus Aran is sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a research team on planet SR388. After contact is lost, the Galactic Federation dispatches Samus to the station orbiting the planet to determine what happened. During the mission she is infected by a deadly organism known as the X Parasite.
The parasite nearly kills her, forcing emergency surgery and the removal of parts of her Power Suit. Federation scientists develop a vaccine using Metroid DNA that saves her life and allows her to absorb X Parasites to regain health and abilities.
Exploring the research station reveals a horrifying truth: the X Parasite has spread through the facility, creating powerful clones of the creatures it infects. One of these is SA-X, a perfect copy of Samus herself with her original Power Suit abilities.
Throughout the mission Samus navigates different sectors of the station, solving puzzles, unlocking new powers, and fighting increasingly dangerous enemies while avoiding the terrifying SA-X.
